Sorry guys, I am still thinking about the same issue:
All else qualifications being equal, ceteris paribus, would a Ph.D in Finance/Economics or a CFA carry a heavier weight in the financial community? |

The PhD route is usually a 5+ year commitment with a dissertation - a major investment in time and energy. In addition, you have the opportunity cost of what you lost in salary during that time. At the end with most major PhD programs, you are highly skilled in research and have an in-depth knowledge of your dissertation topic. A PhD makes you very deep in a finance theory and your dissertation topic, and marketable in academia. Should you have done a dissertation in a high-demand and cutting edge area, you might land a very nice job outside of academia. However, there are hundreds of PhDs in finance out there that work in academia for $75,000 - $125,000 per year. If they could easily make $200,000+, most would go for it. |
