I am wondering whether I should take the CFA exams. You know, it really costs money and time, a big investment. Though so many people are saying that it is for the person who wants to pursue a career in finance industry, I am confused whether it is necessary for the people in different position in the Finance. For me, I am just interested in consulting and corporate finance not sales and trading, investment management, and private equity and more like the job in sell side not buy side. So could you be kind enough to give me some ideas? By the way, I have no previous finance work experience and am doing a finance degree. Thanks a lot. |

I can relate to your situation. I am a CPA who wants to expand my career opportunities in finance and other number crunching activities. I decided to take the plunge and become a Dec level 1 candidate since my employer will pay for 50% of the text books and fees up front and reimburse me for the remainder when I pass level 1. And they will pay for a prep course since I can use it towards my required continuing professional education. However, I do not get any time off to study so I may have to use a few vacation days as Dec 2, 2017 gets closer. I will ask if you have considered pursuing a CPA? In many organizations, corporate finance has more CPA's than real finance people. I do think that a CFA would show people that you committed to finance. At many undergraduate business schools, there is a reputation that folks that could not cut it in accounting end up majoring in finance. And I doubt that the folks that fall into that category are potential CFA charterholders. |
