Hello. I have a university degree in computer science, completed two years ago. during my studies, i also followed a couple of basic financial courses and found it very interesting (much more than computer science :op ). I'm currently working in a generic position for the government (job unrelated to computer science, but required any university degree). I've recently contemplated moving into the financial industry. I realize, however, that my studies and budding carreer so far, are not exactly valuable assets in finding a position. Would taking the CFA exams help me in moving ? If so, when (would it help after, say level 1 or 2, or only after level 3) ? If not, are there better things to do ? Please note that my chief motivation is to find a job which better suits my tastes (I miss working with numbers) and not really earn vast sums of money (I don't have a taste for luxury). Also, please note I'm living in Belgium, if that changes anything. I'm grateful for any input you could share on this issue. Thank you lesoir |

cfa requires committment and it is not just a designation to place yourself in the financial industry. It is a challenging task but the best thing is u enjoy it if you do it believing you can do it. It is a challenge, fun and reward. The best background u need is..."i can do it"...goodluck |

1st, funny enough, I despise computer science. I only completed the university program because I wanted a diploma and because I could. Computer science at the universoty was very different from what I expected and the further I am from a computer (on a professional level), the better I'm feeling. I'm not considering CFA because of salary. I earn enough for my lifestyle already.I just want to find a carreer I'd feel both pleasant and exciting. |

Listen to your heart! If you believe that this is truly yours and you can do it, why not? You can always use your computer knowledge and experience in the finance field. Life is there to live and enjoy it! Good Luck!!! |

lesoir, lesoir, i have been working as an research analyst building quantitative investment models for the past 5 years. i think it is a good idea to take CFA as a stepping stone to a career in financial companies. for example, our group almost hired someone with a computer degree, but backed off because he did not have much finance training. if he had passed CFA level one, the job would have been his. I am encouraging two close friends of mine (one in computer, one in material science) to take CFA as they want to change their career to the financial field. Best luck, yucong |

lesoir, since you like working with numbers, you might consider a career in quantitative investment. in that case you might want to study more statistics. "quantitative methods for investment analysis", one of the CFA text book, could be useful. best, yucong |

I am a chartered accountant from India. I do not know whether going for CFA will add to my career or not. Will it be OK if I go for only CPA and not for CFA. Best Regards Sudarshan |

I disagree with the comments that say you should stick with computers. Just because you have a degree in something does not mean you can't pursue a career in something else if you decide you are REALLY interested in it. Just give it a good thought, because a career change will require a great deal of effort and you don't wanna end up in something you also don't like and then have to change again. The CFA is a difficult program and should not be taken lightly. I think you could probably do well if you applied yourself extremely well in your studies, even though you don't have a background in finance. It all comes down to how badly you want it. If you do pass all 3 levels, any employer should be impressed with your level of commitment and desire to enter the finance industry. I am sure there are other (probably easier) ways of entering the field, but that would depend mostly on luck. Remember- the harder you work, the luckier you get. So if this is something you really wanna do... Go for it! |

I've got an MBA and B.Sc. business management for background, however i feel the need to acquire a more specialised skills set as that is what employers are looking for these days. I have always been interested in finance and i am considering taking CFA now. I would appreciate comments from the more experienced CFAs about the prospects with CFA especially with getting jobs such as financial analyst or in financial consulting especially in view of my non-finance background. Thanks |

Lesoir, follow what your heart desears my friend. Since you are intrested in finance you surely can take CFA and then combine it with the compt scie degree and get what makes you smile. Goodluck! |

Hey, I also find myself going the computer route and taking the CFA. In the middle of majoring in finance I also declared a major in computer studies. A well respected prof told me to learn vb so, considering i already knew a bit of C and had been using computers forever, i just figured i'd go ahead and do a major. Now that i've graduated it looks like i'm taking an IT job. I've worked as a programmer but in finance the best job i've had was in stock transfer. I'm writing the june 2006 cfa and find its a worth while program. I just don't know if there are any job prospects for someone with a dual computer/finance background. It seems good jobs in finance are harder to come by then IT. Any ideas? |

I passed! I did not get a chance to tell you before the exam - but your site was excellent. I will definitely take it next year for Level II.
